I’ve just been asked for a few images of Woodend Mill to feature on a local website. Woodend Mill was built in the 1800’s in the days of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and was built to house a cotton making business. Unfortunately cheaper imports have taken over and the Mill fell into desolation. Since then it has had quite a number of uses to house small local businesses. Visitors to my unit often say they remember the place when it used to be used for an animal feed centre, an aquarium, a cafe.
The most interesting was a lady who was thrown back to the days of waiting, after school, for her mum to finish working on the cotton looms and to go home for tea. She said it was the smell of the oil from the machines that has sunk into the wooden floor boards that took her memory back.
A recent television programme encouraging buy British is filmed very near to a similar large old Mill in Middleton.
