This is the second of 3 photoshoots taken through a year of Eleanor. In the height of summer and in beautifully glorious sunny weather I decided that a meadow photosession was the only answer for it.
We took a picnic into the meadow behind the studio and Eleanor had fun playing with the tea set and eating cake. She also enjoyed playing with the parasol that I brought along, and that turned out to be essential as the sun was so strong. The use of off-camera flash was essential although a little tricky with such an active little sitter. Eleanor is now two and three quarters, usually a tricky age to photograph but the results speak for themselves.

Announcing the Winner of Baby or Toddler 2018:
Welcome to Baby or Toddler of 2018, the final part of the event that has been running throughout 2017 at the Reclamation Room, Lees Street, Uppermill.
In January 2017, I put out a call for babies and toddlers to come to the Reclamation Room every last Friday of the month. They were photographed and entered into a contest, and the most favoured baby or toddler was crowned as that Month’s winner. It has resulted in 7 winners, of which there is a final poll to find out who wins the ultimate prize of a year’s photography sessions with Jude Gidney Photography ( Quarterly sessions with a choice of images from the sessions worth over £600 to be taken during 2018).
The contest was always run on character of the baby or toddler, and all the babies and toddlers that entered are winners in my book!! I shall be offering all a prize for joining in.
The results of the poll will be announced in 7 days time (12/01/18 – voting closes at 12pm 12/01/18)
Here are the finalists. Please indicate your favourite by clicking the blue ‘send my choice’ button at the very bottom of all the images. You may choose more than one :

I’ve recently had the pleasure of meeting little Piper when her mum brought her to my photostudio.
Let me introduce her to you: She was a two year old bubbly little lady, with a bounce of blonde hair and a wonderful smile to go with it.
Now usually I think twice about having a terrible two year old in the studio as the little maturing toddlers are well known to be brewing an awareness and understanding that what ‘they’ want ‘me’ to do, isn’t great fun but is much more amusing to do the opposite. Luckily with Piper we hit on a good note and got her very engrossed in dressing up in frilly dresses and playing with the very interesting toys I have in the studio.
She loved it, and experience and quick thinking allowed me to get a great range of images within the 20mins we managed to keep her attention for.
Then the strop happened – and everything ground to a halt. It made for one final image that is one of my favourites in the set – ‘Miss Diva’.
Here’s a few of the images from the session. The tutu dress was kindly loaned by Dawn Houston of The Small Business Emporium, Denton. The other clothes also available from the Truly Piper range also at The Emporium. A big thankyou also to Piper’s Mum Lis for her assistance in the studio.

Baby Photography, baby photos, recording your baby is so easy to do nowadays with everyone having a camera or smart phone. I encourage mums to take a photo a day to help to keep a record of the changes that are happening, as they so do very quickly between the ages of 0-12 months. This time will go so quickly and memories will likely to be confused and scant. After a year you’ll have a lot of iPhone photos but lost the opportunity for beautifully lit images that you’ll want to frame on put on your wall, in an album, or in a scrolling slideshow. Studio images don’t offer memories but do record them as they change, and make art.
This little chap was just tipping 4 months when he first came to the studio. He was very awake and interested in his surroundings. When he came back a couple of months later the changes were very obvious and he was near sitting and much more expressionate. What expressions does your baby make?

Taking photos of your children is a great way to capture memories – you can improve on your photos with just 5 top tips.
1.Get down. Being on their level helps you to connect with your child and also makes their eyes appear larger and so even more appealing. Crawl on the floor with them, or put them up on a sofa so you can easily make eye contact.
2.Fill the frame of your camera. Again their eyes are seen larger and it’s that contact that helps to draw you into the photograph. The bigger your children are in a photograph the more detail you will see. It’s these little details that change over the years and so will be so appealing to capture. Eyes, eyelashes, nose shape, ears etc.
3.Remove distractions from the background. Try to make sure you don’t have too much going on in the background. Too much detail in your photograph will take your attention from the children and make your eye rove around the photograph. The children are the most important thing you are photographing and so let them be.
- 4. Make their eyes sparkle. When taking a photograph look at their eyes, do they have a light or twinkle in them? If not try turning them to the light of a window, or reflecting light back into them with a mirror or even table lamp. If outside try to capture them with a refection of water or the sky in their eyes, so making them glint. This will make them look bright and awake.
- 5. Get them talking. Getting down on the floor, talking and playing with them will encourage your children to be less anxious about the camera and what you are doing, and will allow you to capture more natural photographs of them being them. It also captures them playing with toys that they likely will grow out of soon, or doing activities like drawing and painting that again they may do less of as they grow and change.
